PuzzleHR Exit Survey: Roadmap to Employee Retention Overview
Last year, PuzzleHR surveyed over 4,000 job seekers, revealing critical insights into why employees leave their organizations. The effects of burnout and dissatisfaction with leadership loom large, with burnout accounting for 21% of departures and leadership dissatisfaction accounting for 11%. Retention must be a top priority for 2025, or leaders risk losing essential members of their teams.
Burnout and Well-Being
Burnout consistently ranked among the top reasons for employee turnover and burnout rates increased with tenure. This poses a problem for companies, as they are losing senior employees. Having to hire and train new employees to replace those who were at the company for 10+ years is a massive undertaking, and the loss of intangible knowledge and experience is not worth risking. Leaders must be able to identify disengaged, burned-out employees before they leave. Employee well-being must be a top focus, going beyond wellness programs and focusing on workloads, company culture, and work-life balance. Companies continuing to promote excessive working hours or not taking time off are bound to see high turnover at senior tenure levels, inevitably affecting essential operations.
Deeper Challenges
Tried and true retention tactics aren’t enough anymore. Improved benefits and compensation are cited as potential retention drivers, but overall rank lower than broader cultural changes, like improved leadership or increased work-life balance. The solution? Focus on creating a sustainable work environment prioritizing employee well-being and professional growth.
The Leadership Difference
Leaders set the tone for company culture, shape the employee experience, and can drive employees away if they are not developed properly. 33% believe that new management could convince them to return to their roles. You don’t need to hire a new fleet of managers to boost retention. Leaders need increased training around developing and nurturing relationships with their direct reports. Take a comprehensive approach to leadership development to assist with cultural issues and make sure to provide leaders with the tools they need to address burnout and maintain a positive culture.
